God affirms a beginning. Genesis teaches a point in time at which an irreversible process began. We must go back to this origin if we are ever to grasp the nature of the world we live in, and the meaning of our individual lives.

Heaven and Earth

Genesis 1:1-2

1 First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see. 2 Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.

 Happy New Year!!

We begin our Bible Study in the book of Genesis as “Genesis” means beginning!

When GOD speaks of  HIMSELF He speaks from a standpoint of timelessness of HIS being because HE has always existed and will never cease to exist. We can clearly see this fact in the scripture reference below.

Exodus 3: 13-14 “The Message Bible” reads…

Then Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the People of Israel and I tell them, ‘The God of your fathers sent me to you’; and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What do I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I-AM-WHO-I-AM. Tell the People of Israel, ‘I-AM sent me to you.’ ”

HE ( GOD) just is but our origins have a beginning, middle and an end. We are a part of the created world and GOD is the Alpha and the Omega!

The Dateless Past (Gen 1:1)

“In the beginning” refers to the dateless past (Prov 8:22-23; John 1:1; Acts 15:18; Eph 3:9; Col 1:18; Heb 1:10; 11:3; 1 John 1:1; Rev 1:8; 3:14). Gen 1:1 is the introduction to the Bible and all of history, because it marks the boundary between time and eternity. It is not a summary of what is to follow, because it mentions heaven first while the following verses mention the earth first. Job 38:4-7 makes it clear that the heavens were created first or the stars couldn’t have rejoiced when the earth was created. This proves that Gen 1:1 refers to prior acts of God. Gen 1:2 shows that the earth was under a flood of judgment. And, the verses which follow refer to the earth’s restoration to a second habitable state. That God existed from all eternity is clear in Scripture (Ps 90:2; 93:2; Prov 8:22-31; Mic 5:2; John 1:1-3; Heb 9:14; Rev 1:4-8; 4:8; 22:5,13). What He did in all the dateless past, besides creating the spiritual, moral, and material universes, is not revealed (see Deut 29:29).

Here are some important take away points

What is the story of man without his GOD? Do you realize the profound effect GOD’s very image operating within mankind has on our position and ultimate function? Satan does, this in part is the reason He fights so against GOD’s creation in placing man/woman of dominion of the earth. In another age, Lucifer had dominion of the earth!

Have you ever stopped to think about what mankind would be like if we had not been made in the image and likeness of GOD?

GOD gives breath, dimension, flare, beauty and intelligence and unique soul characteristics to humans.

We seek meaning, mastery and understanding of life by looking beyond purely the physical into the person of our Creator because it is through and in HIM that we find the very essence of our being!

Genesis 1:1 affirms GOD as the very essence of all creation and introduces an almighty GOD as the central relational focal point for which we were created! A GOD with a mind, emotions and a very definite character.

Ultimate reality is not random motion in dead, impersonal matter. The ultimate reality is a living, vital, personal Being. Life, not death, is the eternal ground of all that is.
